If asked to describe myself, I would say that I am a loner. Happier with a book and some cats than with most people. I have one or two really close friends, but that is it. I went through my 20’s with loads of acquaintances – could fill a big table at our local withContinue reading “Girls’ Weekend”

Is this it?
I turned 50 last week, friends. Yes, the big 5-0. And it was not the 50th I had planned. And I had big plans. But 2 years of un- and under-employment, and Covid, put the pin in those plans. Maybe for my 55th? So how did I spend my day? I worked in the morning,Continue reading “Is this it?”
Hello, stranger!
It’s been a while since I last posted. I’ve been busy! I had to write an exam for my new job, and it was a tough one. But I passed! And then I found out the next day that it’s pretty rare to pass it on the first attempt. Sooo glad I didn’t know thatContinue reading “Hello, stranger!”
A Different World
I have reached the point where I really and truly give zero fucks. I don’t know if it’s living in the country, or working from home, or what the cause may be. But my last fuck has gone. I went to the library tonight in my pajamas and slippers. Drove there, got out of theContinue reading “A Different World”
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…
Remember how I just posted that July was such a great month? Well, something else happened in July. This happened: I am embarrassed to admit that this is what my garden looked like in mid-July. I had a romanticized notion of what a vegetable garden would be like. You begin by flipping through the pagesContinue reading “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”
July 2021 (second half)
There has been soooo much activity in the kitchen the last couple of weeks! Sweet, and savoury! Cherry pie, cannolis, mint chip ice cream, fettuccine Alfredo, arancini. And cheese!!! I made my own cheese! The feta was a great success, and the chèvre was tasty, but not very plentiful. I’ll definitely try that one again.Continue reading “July 2021 (second half)”
July 2021 (first half)
This has been a good month. I struggled a lot with my move here last year – I sometimes still do. But this month, I’ve been reminded of some of the good things about being here – the local produce is unparalleled. Strawberry season was a good one – I made jam, stocked up myContinue reading “July 2021 (first half)”
June 2021
Chatham-Kent is an agricultural wonder. Thousands of farms growing the traditional cash crops, and a great variety of fruit as well. And it’s strawberry season! Scott’s Strawberry Farm south of Highgate has beautiful berries. Going to make some jam, and freeze some for later.
Spring 2021
I planted my garden! It’s bigger than I had originally anticipated, but my cousin worked up some land for me, so I had better make good use of it! Planting took longer than expected. I’m not sure if I’m cut out for the manual labour. I also am getting back into the commercial baking. UrbanContinue reading “Spring 2021”
Winter 2021
Nobody buys baked goods in the New Year. Everyone vows to eat better, work out, cut out the sugar. Not the best time of year for a baker. Need to start planning for what’s next. On the bright side, I signed up for the local Community Supported Agriculture (“CSA”) farm, Urban Sunset Farms. If youContinue reading “Winter 2021”
