…probably 35 years ago. I was young and thought I was “edgy”, and/or desperately trying to BE edgy, like my cool older sister. It’s a small purple flower on my left arm. It’s harmless, really, but it doesn’t mean anything. Didn’t mean anything at the time. It was just an adornment. Not much different from all the earrings I was sporting – it was the early 90s, after all!
My next tattoo was about a year later, and was much more of a statement. Big black flowers on my chest, up toward my shoulder. I loved it! But it was also strategically placed so it was easily covered by my clothes. I liked having that versatility.
And then I think I went over 20 years before my next tattoo, and then they started coming in a flurry. I definitely had been bitten by the tattoo bug. I don’t even know now how many I have. Some are itty bitty, from a variety of artists in Toronto.

After I moved home, I got a few small ones from a local artist, and a bigger statement piece.

But then, I met Becky Berry. She is phenomenal! I have found my forever tattoo artist, as long as she’s doing the work. She has great energy, and she’s an amazing artist. She has done my most recent pieces – the last one was a commitment – it was supposed to be a full leg piece, but I had to prioritize Henry and his adoption over finishing the full leg. It’s still a gorgeous work of art, and I love it. I’ll get back to it someday.

I already have an idea for my next one – a cover-up piece for that little first tattoo. It’s not that I want to get rid of it, it’s just taking up prime real estate.
I can’t explain the draw to tattoos. Did I have a sticker obsession as a child? Maybe? I don’t remember.
Becky is in demand, and it’s hard to get an appointment. Her books opened up for new appointments in September, but I was still unemployed, so a new tattoo wasn’t in the cards for me. I was inconsolable! Like life didn’t suck hard enough, now I was being denied some new art! If this contract I have right now turns into something more permanent, @inked.by.Becky you’ll be hearing from me!
