It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

One thing you should know about me is that I worked in retail for most of my teen years, up until about 27 years old. Part-time, full-time, in management. Most of the time it was a pretty easy, very social job. I called it my Peter Pan job – great, until I decided to grow up. Most of the time. But then, November hits and the malls turn on the Christmas carols and the decorations. And normally rational, reasonable people turn into scavengers, looking for the hot toy of the season, the number one album, the bestselling book. Back when people still shopped in malls. Working incredibly long, stressful hours can quickly turn one against Christmas and the holiday season. For close to a decade, I HATED Christmas. And the wear and tear on my system caused me to be sick every New Year’s. The entire month of December was pretty much a write-off. Following my escape from retail, I was pretty apathetic about the entire holiday.

And then… this year, my second back in the country, I find myself brimming with Christmas spirit. It is November 12, and I have already decorated a Christmas tree, and listened to Christmas music while baking. About that tree – I actually purchased it this year, a cute little four foot artificial, pre-lit tree. My first! I decorated it with little bows in red, white, black and silver. I think it looks quite nice!

As I sit here writing this, one of the cats is batting at a low-hanging bow. Stay tuned. We all have a long time to coexist until the tree comes down (intentionally).
