It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

Remember how I just posted that July was such a great month? Well, something else happened in July. This happened:

I am embarrassed to admit that this is what my garden looked like in mid-July.

I had a romanticized notion of what a vegetable garden would be like. You begin by flipping through the pages of a seed catalogue, and wandering the aisles of the garden centre. Sure, there’d be some hard work doing all the planting, and watering, but then in weeks you’d have fantastic homegrown vegetables.

Nobody told me about the weeding. Or I forgot. Or I blocked that part out. I’m not sure. I’m still a city girl at heart! Anyway, in no time at all, the garden went from a barren landscape to a tropical jungle. There were weeds taller than me.

So. The only thing to do was to put it out of its misery. My sister mowed it down. Decimated it. I couldn’t watch, it was too painful.

Will I try again next year? I can honestly say that I have no idea. A lot can happen in nine months. Let’s see where this journey takes us, and if there’s a garden in the future.

P.S. I am pleased to report that the herb garden is thriving. The basil, thyme, oregano, mint, and chocolate mint are doing very well!
